Whether serving as Christian church, Islamic mosque, or secular museum, Hagia Sophia and its soaring dome have inspired reverence and awe. Inside the Dome of the Rock, National Geographic Magazine

At the end of the 7th century, Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik transformed the city’s skyline by commissioning a monumental structure unlike anything seen before. Built on the Temple Mount, overlooking the Holy Sepulchre and the Western Wall, the Dome of the Rock was designed to deliver a powerful message — architectural, theological, and political. Neither mosque nor palace, the Dome of the Rock proclaims Islam as a continuation of the Abrahamic tradition while affirming its distinct identity. Through its inscriptions, geometry, materials, and dazzling mosaics, the monument addresses Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike, placing Islam as the third monotheism at the heart of Jerusalem. Blending Byzantine techniques with emerging Islamic codes, the building becomes a bridge between civilizations. At its center lies a sacred rock associated with Abraham’s sacrifice and the Prophet Mohammed’s Night Journey — a point of contact between earth and the divine.

This documentary explores how architecture, art, and faith were used to assert power, shape belief, and anchor Islam permanently in one of the most contested cities in history.
